Several companies are becoming well known for mailing out official looking domain renewal notices which are designed to trick the customer into transferring their domain to another registrar.  If you are in doubt about such correspondence or any online company, simply Google it and see what comes back.  Although not 100% this is a good method of identifying fraudsters (if in doubt contact Virtual Riders.)
