If a computer makes more than one beep when it is starting it is telling you something.  If you hear something different, then the computer has identified a problem with one of the parts.  This has happened during the Power On, Self Test (POST) phase of the computer starting up and many times the computer will simply lock at this stage.  There will have been no damage to data and often it is as simple as a memory mismatch.  However, it can spell impending of potential serious failure, so if your machine does continue to start, make sure you have a backup of your data!

You may also see an error message on the screen.  Take a note of it, including the number attached to it.  This information can identify what the problem is and consequently the acrtion required to fix it.

Unfortunately, there isn't a consistent 'beep code' with different manuafacturers using different sequences.  If you want to check these out, there is a web site, but its probably best if you leave it to Virtual Riders.
