If you
want to access the internet before your modem is supplied and installed, you
can use the modem inside your computer or laptop (If installed) to connect to a
prepay service through your phone line. Dial-up
is still available from a handful of ISP’s (internet Service Providers) and
will get you browsing even though at a slower speed.
If you
have a laptop (with WiFi) you could use one of the many Open Access areas for
broadband (for example Mac Donalds – where it is free - and most hotel chains –
where it isn’t).Once you laptop has
‘discovered’ the wifi connection you simply follow the instructions to access
the broadband and go online.
Mobile
broadband is also available from the major mobile phone networks where you are
supplied with a device (sometimes called a dongle) that plugs into your
computer’s USB port.It provides a
service faster than dial-up for a monthly fee (subscription necessary) or
through a pay as you go option which is good as a back up broad band
device. There are a number of points to
consider:
Acceptable
usage – normally about 3Gb per month – check what charges apply if you go over
the stated acceptable usage.
Minimum
spend/maximum time period without spend – check how long your pay as you go
remains live without being used.
The
technology used for broadband connections in these devices is the same as that
used for connectingto the internet from
your mobile phone. It used to be called
GPRS (2G).A bit faster is Edge, then
comes 3G (Third Generation) and the fastest currently is 3G+, 3.5G and or HSPDA
.
You can
also use your mobile phone to connect your computer to the internet. You will
need a USB cable / USB phone cable and specific software. This option is called tethering
